Planned police raid on genocide memorial centre
We are deeply concerned by reports of a plan to raid Srebrenica Memorial Center.
Next week, we’re bringing a delegation of teachers from Scotland to the Memorial Centre in Potočari. They are one of many groups from around the world who visit each year to learn the lessons of the Srebrenica genocide and take them home to their classrooms.
When institutions of memory and education are threatened, we must take a stand.
Above all, we send our solidarity to the staff and associates of the Memorial Centre. Every day, they protect the truth of the genocide for the families and for the world.
What’s happening?
In August 2026, 26 colleagues and associates from the memorial centre were summoned for questioning by police in Zvornik.
Most are survivors of the genocide. They have spent their lives making sure the world remembers.
Beyond Srebrenica wrote an open letter to Scottish government, which resulted in a parliamentary motion reaffirming support for the centre and Scotland’s commitment to genocide education.
Now Director Emir Suljagić has warned that another police raid is coming.
Emir Suljagić: “I know for a fact that a plan is being prepared to raid the Memorial Center… I understand it would involve special police units and Bosnian Serb TV cameras.”
Our call to parliamentarians
In August, MSPs supported a motion recognising the vital work of the memorial centre and reaffirming Scotland’s commitment to genocide education and truth.
Now, we ask them to stand by that promise.
Stand with the Srebrenica Memorial Centre
Intimidation works best when no one is watching. So we are watching.
For the survivors. For the educators.
For the truth of Srebrenica.
