In 2025, we launched a national education competition to mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. The competition is open to all secondary-aged pupils in Scotland (whether they are in mainstream schooling, special education, or home education).
Age categories
There are two age categories:
- For pupils in age groups for S1-3 (BGE)
- For pupils in age groups for S4-6 (Senior Phase)
2025 Winners
We were delighted with the range of entries from across Scotland and the standard demonstrated was superb. Entries are adjudicated by a panel of teachers and the winners in each category were:
BGE
- Overall winner: Jeremiah J (S3) for his artwork on the Potocari cemetary
- Highly commended: Alyssa S (S1), Khadeja H (S3), Kellan J (S3), Nikolas A (S3), Katie F (S3)
Senior Phase
- Overall winner: Findlay C (S4) for his essay entitled “Krivaja 95”
- Highly commended: Luke S (S4), Olivia S (S4), Oliver D (S6)
2025-2026 Competition
The Beyond Srebrenica National Schools Competition is now open for secondary-aged pupils in Scotland. The deadline for entries for this year’s competition is Monday April 13th 2026.
Competition Theme and Entries
This year, the competition theme is ‘justice’. Pupils may interpret this in a variety of ways, but their entry should focus on how we remember and respond to the Srebrenica genocide.
Entrants may choose from the following range of submissions:
- An essay of up to 1,000 words
- An original work of art or performance
- An original musical composition
- A short film
- A community-based project
Entries must be submitted as a link to the piece of work; for performances or projects, please provide photography or films of the work being submitted for consideration. Please do not send in physical artwork, as this cannot be returned.
Prizes
The winning entry in the S1-3 category will receive a voucher for £100. Highly commended entries will receive a voucher for £25.
The overall winner in the S4-6 category will receive a voucher for £100. The overall winner and highly commended entrants will be invited to come on a Beyond Srebrenica delegation to Bosnia. A teacher from their school will also be invited to participate in the delegation. This is a four day trip which is fully funded by the charity. Parental or guardian permission is required in order to attend, and full details will be provided on confirmation of a prize being awarded.
Submission Deadline and Awards
All entries must be submitted by email attachment or link to robinm@srebrenica.scot by Monday 13th April, 2026.
Winners will be informed by Friday 1st May.
