Beyond Srebrenica is proud to support schools that are doing exceptional work in raising awareness of the genocide in Bosnia in order to create more inclusive communities. To recognise and reward the schools that are particularly proactive, we are inviting applications to our Schools Recognition Scheme.  

The Three Categories of Recognition 

Schools can apply for recognition status depending on work being done across three categories. Schools are expected to provide evidence from all three categories, but obviously with an understanding that some will be more substantial than others. Recognized status lasts for three years, and if schools wish to apply for a higher level of recognition during this period they are welcome to do so.  

Category 1: engagement with Beyond Srebrenica 

Schools can be recognized for their work with Beyond Srebrenica in advancing the educational aims and objectives of the charity. Examples of this work might include the following: 

1. Attendance by members of staff, pupils, or members of the wider school community, in a delegation to Bosnia  

2. Including teaching of the Bosnian genocide in the curriculum, particularly with resources produced by Beyond Srebrenica 

3. Holding a talk at the school by a survivor of the Bosnian genocide 

4. Hosting educational events, such as a White Armband Day assembly or commemorative event (May 31^st) 

5. Hosting a performance of the play Inseparable  

6. Hosting a Beyond Srebrenica education conference 

7. Attending events arranged by Beyond Srebrenica  

8. Raising awareness in the school community, e.g. by creating a display about the Bosnian genocide in the school 

Category 2: engagement with broader genocide education with similar aims and objectives to Beyond Srebrenica  

Beyond Srebrenica is one of several charities that work in the field of genocide education to promote tolerance and to challenge prejudice. In this category, schools should demonstrate their work in other aspects of genocide education so that they are providing a broader understanding through a conceptual framework. 

1. Engagement with a partner charity of Beyond Srebrenica  

2. Leading charitable initiatives for a genocide awareness charity 

3. Curriculum delivery on aspects of genocide education (for example the Holocaust, or the Rwandan genocide) 

4. Educational visits/trips to places of significance (such as a museum with a genocide education exhibition, or school trips to places like Auschwitz) 

5. Any other relevant education that can be related to the work of Beyond Srebrenica. 

Category 3: Inclusive Culture and Practice  

Schools should demonstrate their wider work to promote to inclusive practices, outside of the specific area of genocide education. This work should be aligned with the aims and objectives of Beyond Srebrenica. 

1. Evidence of curriculum content that emphasises inclusion and respect for all cultures 

2. Inclusive practices, such as having an active LGBT+ group, anti-racism education, and celebration of cultural diversity 

3. School commitment to social justice, evidenced in specific practice 

4. Examples of similar achievements, such as being a UNICEF Rights Respecting School 

5. Recognition of pupil achievements in inclusivity 

6. Support for pupil voice and democratic practices in the school community 

Application Process 

Schools that wish to apply for a category of recognition are asked to fill in the form below to start the process. The application is not intended to be bureaucratic; a selection of evidence is asked for initially, as a precursor to a meeting with a Beyond Srebrenica trustee. This can be in person, or online. Once the application has been processed, the Beyond Srebrenica board will discuss it, and, if approved, the school will be notified in writing of the outcome.
