Beyond Srebrenica is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Chair of Trustees.
Sabina Kadić-Mackenzie, formerly vice chair, will start in the role in January 2025 as the charity prepares for a year-long programme to mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, and honour the victims and survivors.
Commenting on the appointment, Sabina said:
“This is a profoundly personal moment. I was born and raised in Bosnia and so the events of the war and the trauma that followed are deeply embedded in my identity.
“Along with my fellow trustees, I am committed to ensuring that the lessons of Bosnia are shared far and wide and that the horrors of genocide are never forgotten.
“In this, the 30th year since the Srebrenica genocide, Beyond Srebrenica will continue its vital work. We will remember the over 8,300 Muslim men and boys killed in Srebrenica and the estimated 100,000 people who lost their lives during the Bosnian War, as well as those left behind.
“Our education programmes, including Lessons of Srebrenica and ‘Inseparable: Lessons from a nation divided’, will help young people recognise hate speech and intolerance, empowering them to take action to stop it in its tracks.
“I would like to thank the Scottish Government for their ongoing support, and our outgoing chair, Julie Adair, whose unwavering dedication has been crucial in ensuring that the voices of Srebrenica are heard, not just in Scotland, but far and wide.”
Julie Adair will continue with the charity as vice chair, alongside trustees Barry Fisher, David Hamilton, Robin Macpherson and Hana Đuherić.
