The Beyond Srebrenica National Schools Competition is now open for secondary-aged pupils in Scotland. The deadline for entries for 2025 is April 25th.

Age categories

There are two age categories:

  1. For pupils in age groups for S1-3 (BGE)
  1. For pupils in age groups for S4-6 (Senior Phase)

Competition Theme and Entries

This year, the competition theme is ‘reflection’. Pupils may interpret this in a variety of ways, but their entry should focus on how we remember and respond to the Srebrenica genocide.

Entrants may choose from the following range of submissions:

  • An essay of up to 1,000 words
  • An original work of art or performance
  • An original musical composition
  • A short film
  • A community-based project

Entries must be submitted as a link to the piece of work; for performances or projects, please provide photography or films of the work being submitted for consideration. Please do not send in physical artwork, as this cannot be returned.

Prizes

The winning entry in the S1-3 category will receive a voucher for £100. Highly commended entries will receive a voucher for £25.

The overall winner in the S4-6 category will receive a voucher for £100. The overall winner and highly commended entrants will be invited to come on a Beyond Srebrenica delegation to Bosnia. A teacher from their school will also be invited to participate in the delegation. This is a four day trip which is fully funded by the charity. Parental or guardian permission is required in order to attend, and full details will be provided on confirmation of a prize being awarded.

Submission Deadline and Awards

All entries must be submitted by email attachment or link to robinm@srebrenica.scot by Friday 25th April, 2025.

Winners will be informed by Friday 9th May and will be invited to a White Armband Day event hosted by Beyond Srebrenica to receive their prize.

  • For prize winners in the BGE category, it would be a financial award (via a book token or equivalent) plus a certificate.
  • For prize winners in the Senior Phase, we could consider making the prize a place on a delegation (if they are aged 16+). That would enable us to launch our pupil delegation, giving an additional benefit.
